Information Regarding Verification of Homeless Status


The Embark Georgia statewide network serves post-secondary professionals and institutions to ensure connectivity, share best practices, and provide information exchange among youth, community based stakeholders, and K-12 education.
 
This week's mailchimp focuses on financial aid for homeless and unaccompanied youth. The information below focuses on these three documents:
 
Financial Aid Information
 
  1. A McKinney-Vento liaison can only make the determination of a student's homeless status their senior year.  
  2. If a student becomes homeless after high school has ended, at any point in time they will need to get verification of their homeless status from one of the other three verifiers. This is also the same for subsequent year determinations. 
  3. If the student has not been at an RHYA or HUD funded shelter, then the Financial Aid Administrator is the only person that can make that determination. 
  4. If your DPOC is the Financial Aid Administrator, then yes that DPOC can make the determination. If they are not, then they can write a letter of support if they know about the student's situation. However they can not make the determination. 
  5. In terms of verification, Chapter 5 of the Application and Verification Guide (attached see pages 127-128) indicates that the FAA can do a documented interview, which means they don't necessarily need to have anything else outside of speaking with the student, and confirming that they are unaccompanied and lack fixed, regular, adequate housing to make the determination. Our determination tool can be used in those instances when schools don't have their own form (attached)
